Born Jason Reardon, in 1984, to Desiree Duncan (Psychiatrist) and Morganthal Rearden (Social Psychologist), he grew up in a family of intellectual giants. Duncan and Reardon were are couple who dazzled the psychiatric and psychological forums across the US and Europe. Their initial success was in the form of collaboration (Reardon and Duncan were graduate students at Johns Hopkins together). They were favorites of the media over the years as experts on human psychology especially when their beleifs began to diverge. They engaged in witty and heated debate, and wrote several books together as intellectual rivals. It came as some surprise to the public when Reardon killed Duncan and himself in 2001 with a straight edge razor. Jason, took his mother’s name and did his best to crawl out from his parents illustrious and dark shadow.
Despite, or because, of this tragedy, Duncan found himself studying psychology, in particular criminal psychology. He shunned the limelight, but began a series of works that his peers deemed brilliant if, eccentric. His one popular work was a annotated copy of his father’s notebook, wherein he analyzed and traced the transformation from noted genius psychologist to the man who would kill his mother and self. His ultimate conclusion about his father’s madness led, unfortunately to his career nearly ending, as his theories ran against modern approaches, some called them “archaic”, others “mystical.” And for some time he made do in small colleges teaching or consulting with private detective and others on unusual cases.
His work assisting the FBI with the Black Kettle Cult Massacre, led to his being recruited by Dr. Von Tripp to help work with the Sand Creek project. He helped redesign the facilities, and interview the initial staff. He rejected Von Tripp’s offer to be chief attending psychiatrist, as this would require living in the facility, and he felt uncomfortable in the proximity of so many murderers. He consults with them, teaches a few courses at University of Colorado Alamy Falls, and does the occasional work for law enforcement as needed.
