Gotel is the next generation of compact hotel design, based on the original Yotel chain at Times Square NYC, Heathrow Airport, England, and Schipol Airport, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Founded on the idea that there is a market for travelers who need only a place to sleep, bathe, and stow their belongings while they explore their travel destination, Gotel emphasizes the comfort, convenience, and flexibility afforded to guests by the compact floor plan and self-service features of the chain, all the while ensuring the needs of the customer are met by well-trained, friendly, and knowledgeable staff.

The rooms—called cabins, as they are larger than the capsule hotel compartments that originated in Japan over forty years ago—are designed to provide maximum comfort and amenities while conserving space.

There are several types available for booking: single occupancy with a queen-sized bed, to double occupancy with a single queen or stacked wall-mounted doubles, to family occupancy cabins that are twice the regular cabin size with both a single queen and stacked wall-mounted doubles. All cabins come equipped with private bath with shower. Family cabins have a larger bath including full-sized tub. All baths come stocked with towels and toiletries, with extra available on request free of charge. All bedding is in the European duvet style, with down comforters and Egyptian cotton bed linens. In addition, all cabins have individual climate controls and lighting controls built in, accessible via a convenient command panel at bedside and entry. All cabins are accessed and locked by a secure keycard entry system. All cabins are provided with a wall safe for storage of valuables and electronic gear. Also, all the cabins are fully integrated for internet usage, with high-speed connections and unlimited download capacity, at no extra charge. Audio-visual amenities include multiple ports for plugging in devices, high-resolution flat screen displays at a minimum of 42-inches, and stereo surround sound system. All cabins are soundproofed for privacy.

At select locations, a separate concierge floor offers all cabins at double standard size with upscale amenities such as king beds, luxury appointed baths, private terraces, and butler/maid service in addition to standard concierge service. Presently offered only in New York, London, Paris, Rome, and St. Petersburg, Gotel is developing a mid-level range of concierge service for wider availability.

Outside the cabins, each guest floor is provided with a centrally located, fully-equipped self service galley as well as vending machines for ice and popular drinks and snacks. A small lounge/seating area is provided adjacent to these facilities. For those guests who would prefer room service, it is available from the hotel’s on-site restaurant 24 hours a day. Each guest floor has a small lobby at each of two elevator banks, with an interactive information panel to contact staff and find information.

On the public floors of the hotel, there are a lounge with full-service bar, an on-site restaurant and depending on the individual hotel, specialty dining venues, family friendly recreation areas, a lounge off the lobby with theatre screenings twice a week, a quiet library room with a range of widely-circulated magazines and papers provided, a game room, a full-service business center with separate meeting facilities available for reservation, and in most locations a roof top garden.

A complimentary Continental breakfast is included and served daily in the on-site restaurant. A Manager’s Meet and Mingle is served from 5PM to 7PM weekdays, featuring hot hors d’oeuvres and small plates with coffee, tea, and soft beverages in the lounge-side lobby and theatre.

Gotel’s compact design results a reduced footprint in real estate as well as winning it several industry awards in green design including the much coveted Gold Star Carbon Footprint Rating, making it a favorite choice of ecology-conscious consumers and communities everywhere. Building materials and interior finshings, furnishings, and fixtures are green-sourced wherever possible. All Gotel properties derive 95% or more of their power via solar and other alternative energy sources, with a few properties producing all the hotel’s power needs independently of the municipal grid. Arrangements are underway to increase Gotel’s power self-sufficiency and in the future it is hoped that excess energy produced on site may be credited toward or integrated into the host municipality’s power grid, further increasing Gotel’s green operations.
